Another great post from my favorite blogger, the Naughty Dogge, whose author so clearly and succinctly articulates my thoughts. You can liken socialization to "life experience" which is one of the reasons why I (and other breeders) find so much value in showing dogs.
The Misunderstanding of the Meaning of SOCIALIZATION.
Dogs need to be socialized. That means that dogs need to SEE the world, and handle it with social grace. We need to teach them the skills and habits necessary for participating within our society. Unfortunately socialization got misunderstood as interacting and playing.

I couldn't agree more!"Usually, if the dog is suited to it, they are shown before they enter any of the performance events (like Rally or Agility). The experiences involved in competing in the show ring; traveling, crating, tons of dogs and people, eliminating in different locations, and noise, noise, noise...can be a great benefit down the road. Regardless of what you choose to do with your dog, they are getting out and seeing the world. I always feel a bit sorry for the couch potatoes, regardless of how much they are loved."
